TREE MAINTENANCE

Under Pottstown’s Shade Tree Ordinance, first adopted in 1954, adjacent property owners are responsible for the care and maintenance of street trees.

However, as a public service, Trees Inc. tries to perform routine maintenance on Pottstown’s street trees, although trees remain the legal responsibility of the property owner.  The Trees Inc. maintenance program began in 1993.

Three Elements of Tree Maintenance

• Remove dead and rubbing branches

• Remove low limbs

• Trim branches away from buildings

Trees that are too low block the street and sidewalk. Pottstown aims to elevate the lowest tree limbs on mature trees to 16', high enough to provide clearance even for tractor trailers.

Properly elevated, trees can tower over buildings and shade them, greatly reducing energy costs in the summer.

Tree limbs are also trimmed well away from buildings.
